About Us

Sweet May is a young, heavy rock power-trio, which emerged out of 2021's lockdown gloom. The band's distinctive sound, a fluid balance between vintage blues and piercing heavy metal, has quickly earned them a name in the York scene. So much so they have just recently won York University’s Battle of the Bands 2022. The trio are multi-instrumentalists, distilling grit and soul with progressive percussion and a thunderous bass section. Influenced by bands from Black Sabbath to Detroit rockers Greta Van Fleet, they combine genres to create a distinctly idiosyncratic sound.

Our Band Members

Alasdair (AL) Perry - Band Member

Alasdair (AL) Perry

Al’s family history with drums created a natural interest in percussion from an early age, and as he grew older he began to take the instrument more seriously. He has since branched out, adding guitar and piano to his repertoire, but for Sweet May his calling lies in percussion! His drum philosophy is power, elegance, clarity, and confidence and in Sweet May he has found the opportunity to implement such principles in a creative and progressive musical atmosphere. Off stage, he’s more likely to be found reading than launching a TV from a hotel window!

William Cardenas Berglund - Band Member

William Cardenas Berglund

With Swedish and Ecuadorian roots, and having lived around the world, Will's electric guitar style is built deeply around his multi-instrumentality. Beginning at 6 years old as a drummer and having picked up guitars at 12, Berg's influences range from a myriad of global artists such as Bonham, Clapton, SRV, Zappa and Anselmo. His primary passion is for blues and progressive rock. He's a conceptual musician who loves large scale creative projects, and self-produced two albums during lockdown. He's nearly equally passionate about political theory and history as with his music, and would love to combine his career in Sweet May with academia.

Piers Gilfillan - Band Member

Piers Gilfillan

Piers’ musical tastes have been shaped by the many locations he’s lived in from Denmark and Switzerland to Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Like the rest of the band he’s a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, drums and vocals. With his two musical brothers he released an EP in 2019 while still only 18. He is driven by the process of turning smaller conceptual ideas into ambitious songs, putting power, punch and precision into bass playing.
